440 icd on road to recovery

Post by Purepowder2000 » Wed Mar 21, 2007 12:22 pm

I got my new fuel filter today, so I tried to get my 440 started. No luck, had a good battery, but nothing. There was no smoke but there had to be fumes, because it definitely smelled and I got a little dizzy. I guess I should lift off the tarp I have around it before I try that again. I am having my father's friend over to take a look at it. should I add a little fuel additive to get it to start?

Probably lost its prime when you changed fuel filters. Go back to the message board and scroll down to March 7th, subject 440 icd. Shinnery gave a good explanation of bleeding the fuel system to the fuel pump. Do what he said, and if it still won't fire up, remove the small plug screw from the top of the air box right below the rubber elbow connector. Give a small squirt of ether (really small) and it should fire up.
Your lucky, mine sat too long outside and now its seized from rust.

I did take the screw out of the top of the fuel filter, but not the pump.I will try this next. I was thinking of checking the injecter timing and the exhaust valve. My father started it in front of me two years ago, right before his stroke, so I didn't think I would have to adjust either, right? How would it change from sitting there? The battery I'm using is great at first, but after a bunch of tries it dies.

If nothing has been touched since you last saw it run, then nothing should have changed. It should smoke a fair amount out the stack, I think you are just not getting fuel. Bleed everything real well, that just might do it. Buy a new big battery, and make sure all the cables and connections are good as well. When you are ready to spin it over the next time, a little, and I mean a little ether may influence things a lot.

I'd double everything Lavoy said. A weak battery on a diesel is not going to crank it fast enough and if it's the original battery and been sitting for a couple of years without being kept charged, it's sulfonated and won't deliver either the rate or capacity to pop it off.

Bleeding the fuel system is really important on a diesel. I have an IH 2606 that if you run it dry, you'll run the battery dead without getting it to start if you don't rebleed the fuel system. The injector pumps don't seem to move enough volume to purge an air lock on their own.

Great news!!! Aren't the GM 2-53's just the cat's meow of little 2 cylinder engines? I never get tired of hearing the JD gas ones, but the little 2-53 just sings a song.
If you have not done so, you will want to a tune up on the engine to make sure everything is right. JD Service manual for this engine spells it out as to what to do. If you need any help, let us know.
