440 w/ Backhoe on eBay

Post by jac » Sat Apr 14, 2007 8:40 am

Ok, there is a 440 on ebay with what looks like a 51 backhoe (just guessing). Can anyone tell if this is a factory installed hoe? I do not see any extra reinforcement in the fenders which is required for the backhoe.

Here is the link.

I would like to add a hoe to my 440ICD but since it was not a factory backhoe crawler, I have not been able to find the correct fenders, etc. and do not want to try and rebuild my existing fenders. Just curious if this was a factory installation or not. If so, I may go take a look at it just to see how everything goes together.

Can't really see enough to tell, but the plumbing has me suspicious.

I could set a new world land speed record running away from that deal. Anytime you have a seller selling something like this for another seller, it adds too many layers and they have a litany of excuses as to why they could not tell you the real story.
If you go look at it, let us know what you think as I could be wrong.
Things just do not look right on this one, not at that price. Just my humble opinion.

Not going to buy it, just interested in looking at how the hoe is attached. I agree that it looks suspicious, which was why I asked what others thought. I already have one 440 which I had to rebuild. No need for another one....YET

440 with 50/51 backhoe

Post by emichaelhaynes » Sun Apr 15, 2007 12:17 am

according to my 50/51 backhoe parts catalog (pc619)...

the backhoes do not have pressure reliefs so one is tacked on...

on the earliest models (420, 430, 440) it a separate valve connected to the pump. if you look at the pic (#2) of the ebay 440 you'll see a line running from the bottom of the pump to the tank. that's the return from the relief which is kinda hard to see (behind the red hose). on 1010, 2010, etc the relief may be in the selector valve or pressure may be tapped downstream of the main control valve which has a relief built in.

mounts...

there is a unique mount listed for everything except the 440 with the 831 loader. ain't saying that one don't exist, just tain't in the catalog. always wondered about that. my machine (440/831) has the relief on the pump but no fender reinforcements. the weight/backhoe mounts were cut off to mount a winch.

the ebay machine looks odd because...

the pump isn't mounted quite right... the intake should be low and point toward the outlet of the hydraulic tank. Hoses should run underneath the backhoe. The hoses on that hoe are coming through a hole torched in the frame.

The Mod50 I was bidding on in Georgia last week looked cleaner than this one but its pictures weren't as good. I bid up to $1700 and it was 800 miles away. This one has at least one thing that set off a bell in my head: chain welded to the main boom indicating leaky valves or cylinders. I live about an hour from it. If I had Lavoy's knowledge, a big truck and no wife, I'd go look at it. The hoses connecting backhoe to machine are crazy. The only people interested in this are collectors. To me, it looks like a very heavy pile of junk. I think the way it's written says a lot. "Vintage", "runs strong", "unknown", "leaking a little", "needs adjusting" and ending with "2999.99" and "will try my best" are all used car ad writing at its most trite. The whole thing howls BEWARE. I always look for an owner who's written half a book about whatever he's selling. That tells me he's knowledgeable and interested as opposed to "runs good, make offer". That said, I have a friend who is very competent mechanic, but whose English is lacking, selling a beautiful Mack with this ad: "Big red Mack, runs gud, 6500". And it's a beauty.

Personally, I don't think I would ever buy any mechanically complex machinery from Ebay without going and seeing it first. If the seller doesn't let you come see it, walk away.
