1010 reverser oil

Post by olrobk » Sat Apr 21, 2007 8:14 am

I see Lavoy refers to Hygard "or equivalent" for use in 440 and 1010 reversers.
What’s the latest on the subject of “equivalents” for use in reversers?
I haven’t seen anything about why ATF is not good. Lots of owners apparently use it.

The 440 manual calls for ATF, if this isn't the best someone let me know as I will be putting my reverser back together soon. It had ATF in it when I disassembled it.

I suppose a lot of it might be personal preference. I personally don't like ATF in either application. One reason may be that a multi-trans oil just may provide a little more cushion in these old girls than the thin red stuff. All in all, I don't think you will hurt anything either way.

I think cost can be a factor in what people use as well- tractor type hydraulic fluid seems to be cheaper than ATF.
(1) JD Straight 450 crawler dozer with manual outside blade; (2) JD 2010 diesel crawler loaders; (1) JD 2010 diesel dozer with hydraulic 6-way blade; (2) Model 50 backhoe attachments, misc. other construction equipment

I am no expert but I always use the JD Hi-gard in my 1010 reverser. They tell me it meets all the specs for a 1010 and I figure if it is good enough for todays hi-tech machines it should be good enough for a working relic like a 1010. I have put many hours on 1010s and have never had any reverser problems. I don't think there would be much difference in price, if anything I think ATF would cost more and in my opinion I don't think it would be as good especially considering the heat that is created by a working reverser.

I went with Lavoy's sense that "ATF is a little thin for these old girls" and replaced filters and ATF in my reverser with so-called tractor fluid that my parts house tells me all the locals use. It meets the John Deere lube requirements.
