440 crawler with stuck main clutch

Post by David420C » Sun Apr 22, 2007 8:18 pm

I once read a post here with a 440 crawler with a stuck main clutch. Any luck in unsiezing the clutch without taking the engine out? There is a loader on this 440 which makes it more fun. Thanks

If it has a reverser and it isn't stuck to bad you might run it a while with the clutch in and work it and see what happens if this don't do it you probably have to tear it down.

I don't know if it would work on a crawler, but an old farm trick for unsticking the main clutch on wheel tractors like an 8N is to rapidly push the clutch pedal in and out while moving in a higher road gear. It has worked on my 8N after trying for five minutes or so.

That may be tough to get it moving if clutch is stuck engaged and/or dangerous to do with the terrain in front of you, but is a thought.

I have sprayed penetrating oil in the clutch and have the pedal tied down while driving it but still nothing. When I pull both steering clutch levers back I can shift the transmission with minimal grinding. I thought that was wierd!

If you have put a petroleum product on a clutch, it is essentially ruined. Even if it breaks loose, it will start to slip either immediately, or after a few hours use as the oil or whatever boils to the surface. You will be much better off in the long run if you pull it apart and check it out. Engine clutch parts are not expensive to replace, it is mainly a time issue.
