Well this weekend I want to take my dozer out to do a small job around the farm. When I turned the switch I got the awlful sound of grinding with the starter. Well I'm new to owning a dozer and it looks like there are 2 bolts hold the starter in place. As many know the top bolt looks easy to get to , the bottom bolt looks a lot more diffcult. Before I start this repair, is there any tricks to make this repair eaiser.
Thanks,
Joe

Bottom bolt shouldn't be that hard as long as you are some what of a contortionist.
When you get the starter out inspect the ring gear. Sounds like you may have a bad bendix and/or drive gear. With any luck you didn't damage the ring gear.
I would rebuild the sarter completely while you have it out. Should run about $80.00 for new brushes, bushings, springs, and have the armature turned.

If at first you don't succeed, get a bigger hammer.

I guess you confirmed my my thought that the lower bolt is going to be a challenge. I am thinking a socket with a long extension and blindly go after the bolt. I also thinking of taking off the bottom bolt first and removing the carb so that I can lift the starter out. The only other possible option would be to remove the pan and try and reach it from the bottom. That option seems to be the hard way to go and I don't even know it that is possible.

I pulled the starter this weekend and I had some good news and some bad news. The good news was that the ring gear wasn't damaged, the bad news is that the starter is shot. Do to years of use and lack of service the bushing at the back of the motor is gone, and the small bearing forward of the bendix is also worn out. The bendix forks have flat spots worn in them and of course the leading edge of the bendix gear was worn smooth .
Thanks to great direction from this group I identified the starter as a Delco-Reme TY6704 with a 9 tooth bendix gear.
Thanks for the help,
Joe
