40C charging

Post by decepticon4ever » Sun Jun 17, 2007 11:30 pm

What should my 40 be charging? I am getting 11+ volts. Is that right for a 6 volt system?

I am thinking that a 6 V generator was only going to put out around 8+. Check to see if it is a 6 V or maybe has been switched to a 12 V.

That is way too high. They should do 6.6 to 7 volts I would guess. You need a new regulator or have other problems.

I know that it is a 6 volt system. It starts like a 6 volt and the dead give away is the 6 volt battery. Would having it charge that high make it run bad? I have tons of power but every so often, say every 10 minutes or so it craps out and dies , after I let it sit for 20 minutes it starts up and goes fine. It used to start right up after dying but now its not keeping a charge and I have to hand start it, hence the 20 minute wait. I have to admit it sure starts easy by hand when its cold, 1st crank every time.
At first I thought it was old and dirty fuel. I drained the old fuel and figured that it would pass what was in the carb.
Let me know what you think.

I have never seen a 6 V generator put out 11+ volts. That one baffles me.
As for shutting down, chances are there is something still in the tank that finds it's way to the inlet after running, thus shutting off the fuel.
Keep us posted.
What is funny is sometimes we end up fixing them and are not really sure what we did to fix it.

If it's starving for fuel, as it sounds like it is from your description, check this. If it's original, there's a screen in the elbow fitting on the carb. Make sure that isn't clogged up as well as the sediment bowl under the tank.

That is way too much charge voltage. Somethings not right there.

Replace your V. Reg. It should be no more than 7.5 volts for a 6v system.
That should also fix your shutting down problem. 11 volts puts too much current thru the coil overheating it, causes loss of spark, engine dies. Cools down after 20 minutes or so and will start back up again. May also need to replace coil and points as the heat will damage them.
