420 roller lubrication

Post by steelmarlin1 » Wed Jun 20, 2007 12:33 pm

Hello Lavoy and everyone. I have a question in regards to the upper & lower rollers as well as the front idlers. I recently purchased a 420 5 roller which I have been tinkering with and was wondering about what to use to lubricate the previously mentioned items. Should I use 140 weight gear oil as mentioned in the manual or does everyone just use a grease gun with grease? If it turns out that it does take 140 gear oil, how to you pump the oil into the fittings as I have never seen a grease gun for use with oil? I do have the correct adapter to hook to a grease gun to slide over the fittings on the rollers but I'm assuming this would work with heavy grease only. Hope this isn't a stupid question !!!

Hi Steelmarlin-

There have been a number of threads discussing what you need to know- they can be found using the search function but I went ahead and copied the links to them so you wouldn't have to search.

Hi,

You're not going to beleive this, but I'm still using the same Socony Gargolye No 10 lubricant that my dad used from Day One.

This is from a 5 gal pail that's at least the same vintage as the crawler and probably older. There's still about half of the pail left after all these years. It's really thick stuff these days, so I thin it with a bit of modern SAE 140 before it goes in.

Great stuff, but I think I have all that's left in the world. Heck, the can the stuff is in is probably worth as much as the dozer to the right collector of such things! :P
