propane conversions

Post by brettjones » Sat Jul 07, 2007 10:22 am

I have a 1010 that has served me well for the last couple of years but this spring the old girl wouldn't start. I had spark, but the plugs we washed with fuel so I've pulled the carb and found it to be a mess (scale rust, debris, etc.). I've ordered a rebuild kit for that, but I also noticed the fuel flow from the tanks is but a trickle. So the tank will come off and I'll do my best to clean it out and seal it. It's had a full tank all winter, so I don't expect and leaks.

Anyway all this fuel system stuff led me to wondering if any has seen one of these machines with a propane conversion?

I have never seen any conversions to propane. You might want to consider the ramifications of propane though.
Best thing you could do is rebuild your carb, replace the fuel lines, and clean the fuel tank thoroughly. When you are ready to put the old girl away for awhile put racing gas in the tank.(I know its costly, but racing gas will not varnish and go stale like regular)
Just my 2 cents.

My intention is to repair the system that's fueling it now. It's of course far cheaper to repair than to go with the propane conversion kits I know of ($100-$200 compared to $1000+).

I guess it was on my mind mostly because I've been considering it for an offroad rig I'm planning.

Propane is awfully friendly to an engine and the system works great at any angle.
