Has anyone been around a crawler with solid state ignition? Is it a good thing?

I put it on one of my 420's, kind of had mixed emotions. If you are in a warm climate, should be no problem, but up here in the cold, it got kind of obnoxious. The ignition system will not fire below 4.6 volts, and when cranking in cold temps, you don't have enough voltage until you let go of the starter rod. You could crank it til you know what freeze's over, but it would not fire until you let go of the starter rod, then it would start.
I think on a 12 volt system, they would be the cat's meow.
