New engine ready to install except.........

Post by dedeye » Sun Aug 19, 2007 9:48 am

Hey Lavoy or anyone else.
The new motor for my 430 is together except for the flywheel.
My question is : The camshaft is exposed at the rear. In other words while I was installing the flywheel I noticed the end of the camshaft and bearing is showing to the rear. I looked in the book and it doesn't say anything about it but a picture shows what appears to be a cover over the end of the cam, Sort of like a freeze plug or something
Any ideas?
Thanks
Dan

Camshaft Plug

Post by JD4302010 » Sun Aug 19, 2007 1:24 pm

There is a plug to fill that hole and it's alot eaiser to put in before installing the flywheel.
Good Luck

The plug is a Deere item only, it is an odd size. Don't install it too deep, you will cover the oil hole and starve the valve train for oil.

Lavoy
I don't see how a plug will fit in there.
The cam bearing is almost flush with the block and the cam is inset about an inch from the end of the bearing.
I take it the plug installs inside the cam bearing?

Dan,
If the cam bearing is flush with the block, it is installed incorrectly. The cam bushing should be flush with the end of the camshaft. Make sure that the hole in the cam bushing lines up with the slot in the bottom of the cam bushing bore or the head will not get lube. Trust me, learned this one the hard way on a 40 engine.

Lavoy
The way it sits now the hole in the cam bearing is lined up with the hole on the top of the block that the oil pressure gauge screws into.
If you look through the oil gauge hole you could see the flywheel. if it were installed
Am I going to have to remove the cam to push the bearing in further?
Thanks.

You will have to remove the cam, then remove the bushing and turn it about 180 degrees give or take. The oil galley slot is on the bottom of the cam bore.

I called the machine shop this morning that rebuilt it for me and advised them of the situation.
The guy said they would fix it.
I hope so. this little project is going to bankrupt me!
Thanks again.

Engine Plug

Post by JD4302010 » Wed Aug 22, 2007 12:30 pm

Dan,
The JD part # is M 108 T. John Deere is pretty Proud of the plugs with a cost of $11.25 each. The out side Dia. is listed with Deere as either 1.927" or 1.951". I think I got the last one I used form an engine rebuilding shop. They also installed the Rear Cam Bearing wrong.

Get yourself a parts book for your crawler and set up an account with John Deere at https://jdparts.deere.com/.

O.k. Lavoy
I'm ready.
I have called every John Deere dealer in Maine with poor results.
Oh I would have had their undivided attention if I were purchasing a new excavator or something but seemed too bothered to look up the parts I need.

I would rather buy from you .
I need the afore mentioned cam plug, a new fan belt and the front bolt that holds the throttle bracket on the head. This is the long skinny bolt.

Thanks.
