Wrench in steering clutch

Post by gloomis » Mon Aug 27, 2007 10:38 am

Heres one for you. I was working on adjusting the steering clutch on MC and dropped a wrench into the dark hole of the steering clutch/final drive. I assume this wrench went to the bottom of the housing? Any ideas on getting out vs tearing down the whole final drive. Funny how something simple can turn into a nightmare! gl

A long piece of wire, a good flashlight, maybe an inspection mirror.

lavoy, was I using the wrong hole to adjust? Do you adjust clutch from the top inspection covers? What bolt do you loosen to adjust?

When I pull back on the right steering lever the MC won't turn and about stalls out. I was thinking just a little adjustment, but that was a bust after dropping the wrench inside. The manual was vague on what bolt to loosen......gl

Great ideas thank you. Now, which darn bolt do you loosen to adj?? Is it the one under the set screw/lever piece. Looks like a 9/16? gl

The bolt to adjust the throwout bearing takes a 1/2" wrench. It looks like a 3" long piece of hex stock, and is difficult to see. It can not be accessed with a standard wrench for the most part. You either need the factory wrench, or you need to make your own.

Thanks Lavoy, I was looking in the wrong spot. I assume this works similar to brake drums on a truck? I got the wrench out last night with a magnet. Felt like I had just caught a big salmon, yahoo!

thats good to here.. if adjusting the throw out bering is like a 440.. i use a deep well 1/2in scoket then ise a pry bar to move the trow out bering over to were i want it.. may not be the right way but its worked for me on my 440.. but one tip would be to use electric tape to hold the scoket to the extension so it dont fall off like mine did..lol

anyone out there have a photo of what this 1/2" wrench looks like? Or better yet anyone have an extra one they'd partwith? Again, I assume this wrench goes in from the top with the cover removed. I also have one hole on each side of the clutch case. behind legs while seating on machine. What are these for? gl

Wrench is actually an overstatement, it is more like a small piece of plate with two half inch notches in it welded to a bent rod. They work if everything is free and lubed, but that is about it. What I do is go buy 4 cheap half inch box end wrenches, and cut the ends off. Weld them to a piece of 5/16" rod at the appropriate angle, and you will have a lot better and easier to use setup.

You can get magnets on the end of a heavy piece of copper or aluminum which will go around parts where a magnet on a straight stick can't go. They're great. You can even fish around in an engine oil pan through the drain plug.

Since we are on the JDcrawlers Tool Corner;

Best tool/part grabber I ever made was getting one of those small horseshoe magnets like used in elementary school science class and wrap a coat hanger around it. You can pick these up at Lowe’s in the hardware dept. in the special bins.
