Reinstalling Tracks

Post by wwattson » Wed Aug 29, 2007 11:18 am

Anybody got any thoughts on the best way to reinstall a freshly painted set of tracks? Do you paint up the tracks assembled and pull them onto the crawler or mount the rails and reattach the pads? I can see advantages to both but with JD yellow track frames and JD green tracks, it sort of forces the issue of how much painting you can do with the tracks installed.

Thanks,
Bill Wattson

Bill,
I will be easier to mount the pads on the rails, and paint as an assembly. If you mount the pads when the rails are on the crawler, then you have unpainted bolt heads to touch up.

Hi ,

Does it really matter? The paint won't stay onto the pads for long anyway, even for a show machine. So, unless one is sticking the thing inside a museum, I'd opt to leave the entire track ass'y unpainted. Take the rails off, paint the frame and such, and then put the unpainted rails back on. Or, maybe just do the inside? The paint might stay for a while on the inside of a show machines rails.

I painted a set of tracks for a cat twenty two- both sides and I will probably never do it again. I don't think I will ever paint the business side of the pads again. I do like painting the rails and the backside of the pads, but the other side wears "SOME" of the paint off quickly.
