Good point Brian. I've got the four bolts shoes so it would be impossible to get the rails on backwards if the pad was facing the right way as the front and back bolt spacing are different. I haven't dealt with the two bolt rails so I don't know how difficult it would be to mount the shoes backward.
If I read your post correctly, Bill has the rail going the right way.

I had to read this three times to understand it. It is the word 'barrel' that was confusing me. If I substitute the word 'bushing' then it makes a lot more sense (to me, anyway as we call these things pins and bushings on crawlers).
As you say, it really doesn't matter all that much as most crawlers wind up going backwards and much as they do forwards, and the worst of the wear will occur in reverse as the power winds up transmitted through all of the sprocket teeth in contact with the chain link bushings in reverse (as opposed to the first three teeth in forward).....
