420 tachometer

Post by Ray III » Sat Sep 22, 2007 9:16 pm

Yeah I have the classic busted tachometer.

I was able to disassemble it and found cause of failure was the hourmeter wheels seized to the shaft so the first wheel broke off and the bits jammed up the worm gear drive which snapped the tach cable. The tach needle is also broken where it meets the shaft from the magnetic drive because that seems to have fallen apart (didn't have time to go in there yet).

I think I can make it work again with the help of a parts tach from some other machine but same company that made it. Problem is the paint on the tach face is done. There is a rust stain at the very bottom and the paint is so fragile it falls off if I merely touch it (some aluminum showing now).

What have people done to restore the tach face, without sending it in to some restoration company? Failing that, where can I get a replacement tach; does Deere still sell them?
