440icd engine difficulty in turning over
440icd engine difficulty in turning over
1959 John Deere 440 ICD won't start. Engine ran fine one day, the next it wouldn't turn over. Replaced battery, rebuilt starter, no help. Connected battery to starter directly, bypassing cables, no help. Oil seems okay, no sludge. No oil and coolant mixing that I can see. Removed hydraulic pump, no help. Requesting assistance in diagnosing problem.

If your good battery and starter will not turn the engine over, there is apparently something gone wrong inside. I would check the blower to see if it seized or is binding. If it is correct, you will need to at least drop the oil pan to see if you can locate anything wrong.

Before you start pulling things apart...
If you have an inch and a half socket, it'll fit on the nut on either the cam or balance shaft weight. Try rocking it both ways to see it it will move. If you got water in a cylinder, hand cranking the engine backward will allow it to clear via the air box.
Also a good way to set your valves and injectors.

There is a geartrain on both ends of that engine, you might try to see if it will turn backwards. I think before I pulled the pan off I would remove the blower and/or governor to see if this freed it up. Possibly also the fuel pump. The pan and then the head would be my last choices.
