Has anyone made their own grousers?

Post by CCWKen » Fri Jul 15, 2005 8:34 pm

I will need to add grousers to do some "dirty" work later this year. The 420C currently has street pads and breaks traction on heavy pushes. I was thinking of using angle iron and just bolting them on. (I want to be able to remove them for driveway duties.)

Anyone ever try this with say 3/16 x 2" angle?

I think you are going to find that the angle iron will be flat iron in a very short time. A better alternative would be some sort of flat bar stock, like 1" square shaft stock. Also keep in mind, that if this is on a loader crawler, grouser put a terrible amount of stress on the trackframes.

Not a loader but a dozer. This is the one with the boom, Lavoy. The 1" square is a good idea.

Ken-

Let us know how your gousers turn out. I've toyed with making a complete set for both rails on our 420 dozer.

Ken,
That crawler will crush angle iron is a real short time period, in addition to the potential damage to the underacarrige and such. That crawler is too heavy to have grousers on it, it put a lot of stress on everything.

John Deere never made a bolt on grouser, only thing available were the "ice caulks", but they would add little traction in dirt.

Grousers

Post by tomcat4144 » Tue Jul 26, 2005 6:25 am

I stand corrected! the grousers are for my D4. somebody out there must have made something besides welding grousers on. i think back in WW2 the tank crews had trouble with too soft ground and somebody came up with bolt on "Duck feet?" which extended the width of the pads. if that would work on a much heavier tank, some kind of bolt on grousers should work, but if your into any rock at all, the stress would be awfull i`d think.
