440 IC transmission

Post by BLS » Wed Oct 31, 2007 1:48 pm

Is there a access plate in the top of the 5 speed transmission housing under the seat? I'm looking at one that has a 3X5in steel plate bolted to it.

Thanks
Brian

about all you can do is see the ring gear to see what shape it is in.

Howard
Thank you.
It almost looked like someone made their own inspection hole & then covered it up with the steel plate.

Brian,
You are close. When the diesels came out, they went to a bigger transmission. Part of this is a larger ring gear which will not fit in the case without relieveing the case somewhat, hence the hole and the cover.

Lavoy,

Does that mean that any transmission with that rectangular plate under the seat is the "Large" transmission? That would be an easy way to identify the later transmission.

Chuck,

Lavoy can verify this but I believe the easiest way to ID them is that the larger tranny has a dip stick and the smaller one does not. At least, that is the way my two trannys are.

Yes, the plate will identify the large tranny, as well as the dipstick, forgot about that.
