Steering clutches?

I am new to this message baoard and in need of help. I own a 1951 JD40. I have had it since '77. My problem is this: When I pull the right lever, slightly, the crawler stops. What could be causing this? I took apart the clutches and cleaned them - put everything back together but there was no change in the problem. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Do both tracks stop? Does it bog the motor down when it stops?

If it stops when you pull the right lever, the left clutch is slipping assuming it is not mechanical. Pressure plate springs may be weak as well. Did you adjust the pressure plate with a clutch gauge when you had it apart?

Everything stops when the right lever is pulled but the engine does NOT bog down. We ran the crawler up against a tree and it bogged down a bit but it kept running. (The tracks didn't spin) I am thinking it should kill if it can't go anywhere. In reply to Lavoy, I did not adjust the pressure plate with a clutch gauge when I had it apart. I do not understand your comment in regards to the left clutch slipping when I pull the right lever? Could you elaborate?

the right side is probably the only side pulling,left side is just slipping,was there any sign of oil in the clutch compartments?
make sure your adjustments on the clutches are right,if thats not it your going to have to go back into that left side.

When you pull the right lever, you are disconnection power to the right track. Therefore the only track with power would be the left one. If the left side is not pulling, then the left clutch is slipping.
