Parts interchange??

Post by gus » Tue Nov 13, 2007 10:54 am

I have a 40 and 420. The 40 is more of a basket case and I keep thinking it may get parted out. It really depends on what I find when I tear down the engine. It's sat outside for years (previous owner).

Is the hyd pump and PTO the same on a 40 and 420?? 40 has both and 420 does not.

What other parts will interchange??

The pump will bolt up and work but is smaller and uses a different suction line, tank and valve. PTO is different, 40 crawler had kind of it's own PTO.
Rollers are the same, front idlers might be, finals might be if the 40 had newer finals put on it in later years. If you have an all green 420, the transmissions will be the same too.

I was not aware that the rollers were the same. I thought the 420 had bearings. The 40 came with 6 brand new rollers!!!

Other than number of links, is the sproket or track the same? I guess I could get out the measuring equipment and check that

Rails and sprockets are different. As to the rollers, I assumed you have a 4 or 5 roller 40. If you have a 3 roller, then the interchangeability goes drastically down.

I have a 420 and a basket case 40, the 420 tracks have 4 bolts the 40 has 2 bolts. I have a 4 roller - is it possible for any of the final drive, steels or through out assembly to be the same to a 420.

420 under serial number 100,000 and 40 used the same final drives. It was also common in later years for 40's to get the later style 420/430 final drives, so quite possible you will be able to use the finals.

There are Heavy Equipment Parts and there are Heavy Equipment Parts... either way construction equipment breaks.

I have a 420 with 4 bolt pads and a 40 with 2 bolt pads. I even have some pads that look to be 6 bolts or a generic pad, might be that someone used 4 bolt pads and drilled them to fit the 2 bolt.

Are the 4 bolt pads for 420 and later or is there 420's with 2 bolt pads?

Just curious in my quest to find a set of pads.

Have a happy and safe Christmas.

4 bolt pads came out with the 1010/2010, the two cylinder crawlers did not use 4 bolt pads. 1010/early 2010 rails are the same pitch and bushings size as 420-440 and became the replacement rail in later years, or someone has put a used set on the crawler at some time. I can get you new 4 bolt pads, 2 bolt pads are Deere only, or may be obsolete at this point.
