transmission troubleshooting question

Post by BLS » Wed Nov 21, 2007 3:01 pm

I've been looking at a 440IC this past weekend. It does not have an engine in it.

I tried to turn the shaft that goes into the transmission by hand. It would not budge (yes it was in nuteral). Both clutch levers have to be pulled back when pushing the tractor to get it to roll.

Does this indicate that the transmission is locked up or are just the clutches froze, or both?

Thank you.
Brian

Brian,

If the shifter is in neutral and it will not roll unless you pull back on both steering clutches it means the transmission is locked up. It could be lots of broken parts in there or the shifter is messed up and the transmission is in two gears at once. You will have to get in there to see, woiuld be best to have a service mannual to know where the gears are supposed to be in relation to each other to be it neutral.
Looking on the bright side, at least the steering clutches are not locked up! :D

Chuck,

Thanks for the reply. That is what I was afraid of.

Does anyone know what the average cost of a transmission rebuild would run (bearings and seals only)?

transmision

I went thru the transmision on a 430 last year and was able to get most bearings and seal at the local bearing store.
