Reverser question from a Very new 2010 owner

Post by Ashell » Mon Dec 03, 2007 6:45 pm

I asked a few weeks ago about a 1010 crawler and several people replied that it is a 2010 after I posted some pictures and they are right. Thank you for the information. :) Now at the risk of showing my complete lack of experience with crawlers. I would like to know the proper way to use the reverser. I have played around with my new toy for about an hour and curently I am using the clutch when I shift from low to high or to reverse. Is this right or is it alot of clutching for no reason?

Thanks in advance
Alan

If it is like my 440ICD reverser, I have always heard to use the clutch with the reverser and there is no neutral position on the reverser. The big no-no is to try to go forward in reverse/reverse. HTH

Hi Alan-

I believe you probably have the H-L-R (high-low-reverse) transmission, correct? If so the "reverser" lever is between your legs and is marked as H-L-N-R with a flip over tab to hold it in the neutral position when stopped. The actual gear selector would be on the right dash. My understanding is that it is a hydraulic reverser so it is not the same as the earlier models with regards to damaging the transmission or the need to use the engine clutch for H-L-R. However you need to be stopped and use the engine clutch to shift between gears on the dash. Let someone else on here confirm that though.

The 2010 cralwers also came with a constant mesh transmission that I belive would need to be clutched to shift into reverse; I have the H-L-R so I can't tell you what the shift lever looks like for that transmission. The gear selector would probably still be on the right dash though.

HLR use

Post by Pammark » Tue Dec 04, 2007 10:40 am

I have a 2010 and you are correct with the HLR with neutral in the middle. It is hydraulic so you do not need to use the clutch. I have found several characteristics.

The engine will not crank if not in neutral. The clutch pedal ready is not a mechanical clutch, but hydraulic. To start the engine in the cold, pull the left foot rod up to the notch to mechanically work the clutch to the tranny. It is good to use the pedal clutch to shift the speed ranges. I use the pedal clutch to move slowly to and from the job. There is a tranny oil pressure gauge on the left dash. If low pressure, the HLR will not work.

One additional point about the foot rod- when used it will make starting a diesel a HECK of a lot quicker as the engine will turn over easier. However the hydraulics and transmission will not work until you put the lever back down, and I have heard it is bad to leave the foot rod pulled up for any longer than necessary to start the engine.

Thank you. I do have the HLR transmission and not the constant mesh.
Tigerhaze my crawler sounds almost identical 2010 with a model 50 backhoe the only difference is I have a drott 4 in 1 bucket. I do hope I never go through the misery you did when you slipped your track. I do appreciate all of the information I am sure I will have more questions as I learn.

Well, yours is already a little better than mine with the 4in1. I would like to get one but they seem to be few and far between and pretty pricey, especially to ship.

I'm still learning myself but every problem and mishap makes us just a little more knowledgeable. Feel free to ask questions anytime, and I'm sure one of us will try to help you out. Have fun!
