Same thing, I have heard of it being done, but I can't attest to it's effectiveness. The pressure plates moves very little when the clutch is depressed, so I don't think you will actually create a gap, just relieve the pressure against the disc. It's possible that is all that is necessary too.

I believe it is worth blocking the clutch. I have been doing it for quite sometime (after I had one stick) , and have not had a stuck clutch since.
I believe that just having the pressure off of the discs is a plus. They may stick while being free but when you apply the pressure from the pressure plate there is just enough movement to break them free. At least thats my thinking.
Sort of works like air brakes on a truck in winter. Don't apply brakes in extremely cold weather and they won't stick, they are still frozen to drum but as soon as you apply the brake the little bit of movement will break them free.
