If the crawler has a reverser, it is most likely the spring in the drive plate that bolts to the flywheel.

My crawler does have a reverser if it is what you suspect is it terminal or can it go unatended for a while? is it dampening springs in the driveplate to the reverser worn? i still havent got a manual and am flying blind

Well,
I just spent 20 miuntes in the manuals, and can not find a pic of what the drive disk looks like. From what I remember, it has a set of springs around a circle to provide cushioning. I am writing this from memory, so take that for what it is worth. Given that, my personal opinion is that this is the noise you are hearing, and realistically, you probably will not hurt anything by running it, but when they give out all together, you will have a really big boat anchor to drag out of the bottom of the hole it is in when it breaks. :lol:
