JD crawler

Post by country53 » Tue Jul 26, 2005 5:03 am

I found a JD crawler in a blackberry thicket, it looks something like my 420 but the hood is more square and the #'s are gone. It has a lot more levers and grease tensioner for the tracks and a hydraulic blade adjuster. I was wondering what it is.

Hi,

Could be a 440. They're 'the same thing, only different' vs. the 420. They went to a weldment on the nose, as opposed to a tin radiator shroud and seperate brush guard. They also had the dash from the 430, and used a flatter hood. This would make it appear like a 420, 2-cyl engine and all, yet also make it look different - more industrial, which is exactly what the 440 series was intended to be used for. :)

It might also be the later 1010, which carried the same styling as the 440. The difference here being that the 1010 had a 4-cyl engine. Both the 440 and 1010 could be had with hydraulic track tension adjusters.

Here's a link to a good photo of a 440 crawler/dozer:

And here's one of a 1010:
