How steep of a grade can my crawler go down

Post by Bruski » Mon Jan 07, 2008 11:18 pm

Hi All,
I have a JD350 crawler loader. Does anyone know how steep of a grade it will go down. I want to take it to my cabin how ever there is no road down. (water access only) the other option is to take it across the ice in winter. Any idea how thick the ice needs to be for this machine.
Thanks, Bruce

If your looking to know how thick the ice needs to be, give the king of obsolete an email. Has an amazing collection of different restored crawlers in northern Manitoba. Runs the ice up there all the time. Although he doesn't have any jd crawlers he has about a dozen internationals and cats. I'm sure he'd be up to an email.

If the crawler has street pads, on a frozen surface, the allowable incline will not be much. I slid a 350 loader down a fairly slight hill one time, scared the pants off me. Not that I was going to get hurt, but the guys shed was at the bottom of the incline, and on the other side of the wall was a Waterloo Boy tractor.

It does have street pads. A runaway crawler is never a good thing. What do you think about winching it down and also using the bucket to stop it if it is to steep? There are lots of trees to attach a winch to.

If you have a winch, then it should be no problem, you should have total control of the crawlers speed. Bucket might help, but if it is that frozen, it may not dig in, or if it does, might be kind of an abrupt stop.

If I take it down the mountain side I would do it in the summer months so the ground would not be frozen.

Then you should have no problem if you exercise some care. Realistically, a winch will let the crawler down where it would be impossible for you to walk as long as the engine will run.
