I checked my 1010 last night for a serial number. It looks like it once had a tag on the engine, but is now missing. Is there any other way of finding out the information? I am told there is a difference between early and late 1010's, other than the final drives, what was changed?

I am not familiar as much with the 1010s, but I have a 2010 and I had the same issue (engine was replaced with one from an ag wheel tractor or combine). I was told that I wouldn't be able to ever know the exact serial number, but there were some other differentiating features that have helped me narrow it down some.

One way to help narrow it down is to get a parts book for the 1010- the parts book shows when parts numbers differ between the serial number ranges. On my 2010, the fuel injector lines and assemblies differed between serial number ranges as well as some of the undercarriage parts (sprockets and rails/pins/bushings). Since mine is a diesel, it also helped narrow down the range by looking at the production years on the johnnypopper website. I know that mine is likely an early 2010 between serial number 210897 and 42000 (1962-1963).

Others on here such as WWatson and Lavoy will be able to give you more specifics about the 1010- sorry I can't be of more help.

Early 1010's had the shifter in the dash, later on the floor. There was a final drive change at about 31,000, several transmission changes, very late crawlers have a dry type air cleaner, glow plugs and injectors changed. That is a few I can think of quickly.

thanks..that helps....I have a parts book coming in the mail, should be here in a few days. The shifter on mine is in the dash and the final drives are the older style.

I have lots of experience in your problem as I have an early model 1010 with the shifter on the dash. Here is what I used to narrow down mine to serial# 12,801-15,257

serial numbers
1960 10,001
1961 13,692
1962 23,630


<21,900 steering brake handle, shifter, hydraulic pump shifter, oil fill, thermostat housing all different

<19,343 no "T" on fuel strainer or dual suction line from tank

<15,258 bolt change for sprockets to axle shaft, brackets separate on front cross bar

<12,800 drawbar support uses both bolts and nuts to bolt to finals, later the holes where threaded and used bolts only, inner sprocket shield different and uses a spacer.

There are a few other things to check to further narrow down the range, but it involves taking apart the reverser or other things you can not just look at.

When working on the crawler last night, I found what I think to be the serial number of my tractor. It is stamped into the block on the from left hand side. Number T 14536. It appears to be hand stamped. I am thinking that the tractor has had a new block in it at some point. The paint on the block seems to be a light green color instead of yellow, which makes me think that it might be out of an ag tractor. I am also told that new blocks from Deere wouod have been a light green color. Anybody else run into this or have any knowledge?
Looking at the numbers, I believe that puts my tractor at a 1961.

That is a part number, or possibly a block serial number, but it will not tell you the chassis serial number.
