Why use steering clutch gage

I haven't had my crawler very long and I see a reference to clutch gage on a few posts. And I am wonder what is a cutch gage and why use it?

It is used to set the correct amount of pre-load on the steering clutch pack. When you remove the pressure plate, metal plates, and linings, and install new one's, they are at a different dimension than the older one's. After installing the pressure plate, you have to have the correct amount of tension on the new parts for them to work correctly, and get longevity. If not you will be tearing final's back apart and doing them again.
