Lavoy,
Do you have the lower sealing plate (M 88T ) and washer ( M 1304T )
for a 420-440 gas engine oil filter?
After reading one of your answers to a message I couldn't remember seeing some of the parts you refered to and I checked mine and sure enough these parts were not there. Without these does the filter do anything but bypass out the bottom?
These look like simple parts to make but don't know the dimmensions.
Hope you have them

Chuck,
I have the lower plate (M88T) on hand. Unless you have a late crawler, you will not need the washer. That came out on the later machines, and keeps the washer from getting thrown away with the filter. If you want, you can add that to yours, and you will not have trouble again.
The filter probably works without the sealing plate, but I doubt as good, and Deere put it there for a reason, so I would replace.

Hi,
Most times the filter works fine without the lower plate. Sometimes the filter will slip downwards from the spring pressure of the top plate and then it has a tendency to only work halfway, the other half bypassing. You can tell when you take the old filter out as the bottom side center hole will be all distorted.
Of course, it's better to use the lower plate, then the paper filter can't get messed up. This is why it was put in there in the first place.
I always keep extras on hand since I'm always messing with these things (being in the local antique farm club) and often come across machines missing the plate. Most times I'm sure that the factory plate left with the first oil change.....

I was going to order the sealing plate, but I needed to get the filter changed and didn't want to go in there again, so after fishing around I found a large washer whose hole fit the stepped-down part of the riser. It works great. But I guess not everyone has a bunch of giant washers sitting around.
