1010c mods vrs correct resto

Post by brettjones » Fri Feb 01, 2008 6:10 pm

My 1010 was worked hard over it's life. It's missing some parts (track and sprocket guards), has parts of the track frames cut off to access the sprockets and has a very questionable rig fab'd onto it to skid logs. I like the machine and want to repair it and keep it around but I'm not interested in restoring it to factory specs.

So my questions is what improvement mods are recommended for the 1010?

Also I've been thinking of converting a pickup to propane and I was wondering if anyone here has a 1010 running LP?

Thanks.

I've given that a bunch of thought and if I had it to do over again, I would start by not getting a 1010 and have either gotten a 440 or ponied up a bit more money and gotten a 350.

All that being said, if I was going to turn my 1010 into an everyday worker, I'd swap out as much as I could of the undercarriage for the later 350 stuff. I'd go with the newer style sealed rollers, 350 weld-on sprocket rims, 350 track rails, and look at coming up with a way of doing some sort of wear plates for the idler slides.

The biggest problem with the 1010 that you can't easily deal with is the engine. I'm sure there must be something else out there that could be adapted but the parts availability and cost of dealing with the stock engine is the biggest downside of the 1010 in my opinion. Everything else seems workable if you go to later model undercarriage components.

My two cents worth and probably worth every penny of it.

Thanks Bill.

I'm in need of some rollers and I'd read about the sealed units so that's a likely upgrade. My tracks still have some life and my sprockets are in great shape. Idler slides are an issue with my machine.

The more I think about it the more I think just going through and fixing all the issues with modern parts (sealed rollers, etc.) were possible is the way to go. I'll be lucky of I put 80 hours a summer on the machine so no need to go crazy.

Just a thought but while I had the track frames off my 1010 I took them to a shop by me and he cut pieces out of the area where the idler rides and welded in new pieces of what he called T-1, which is very hard and does not wear easy. I have put apx 500 hrs on so far and to this point it looks good, no wear at all.

one thing I did to mine was convert over to a gm alternator, rewired the electrical system.
1010's are what they are, good little helper to have around for work here and there...
mine serves it's purpose well,I wouldn't dream of trying to work it everyday....the little guy is approching 50 years old.

A conversion to negative ground and upgrade to an alternator is a good idea. I forgot about that one although I've already done it on my IH2606 TLB project. Good catch!

when changing over to neg ground and an alternator, what do you do with/to the starter?

Check this post Brett. There's a couple of helpful links. I don't think the starter is a particular problem.
