420 track wear questions
420 track wear questions
I'm still evaluating the condition of things on my 420 while I disassemble enroute to the transmission repair, yeh ok, procrastinating.
Recently traded some good money and a bad set of 2 bolt tracks for a much better set of 4 bolt tracks. They're not back on yet so they're not really stretched well, but laying on the floor with the slack pulled out they're pretty close to 23+5/32" between 5 pins. I read about 50 of the past posts on tracks but I'm still alittle confused.
Lavoy, you seem to standby 23+1/4 as 100% worn, but I believe in one post referred to 1/8th" per pin and bushing as the max (that would be 5/8ths across 5 pins right)? Then someone else posted a chart last March that showed 23.5 as 100%. Anyway, my old tracks had close to 1/4" per link with the bushing O.D. looking real good but play between the bushings and the link. Real "snakes" when rolled out. As bad as these were I wasn't throwing tracks yet.
My question is: Do you think my "new" tracks (at close to 23+5/32 per 5 pins) will damage my brand new sprockets? I measured a couple bushings and pins in the horizontal and vertical at a number of places and then subtracted the book's dimension for new ones from the worst and came up with about the same 1/32 per pin and bushing as wear...the worst dimension on the bushing o.d. is about .040 less than new (with the least worn dimension still showing no wear.)
The reason I could measure some pins is because there was no master pins. The way the fellow managed to drive them out was (don't throw up Lavoy), He cut through the link at the pin, then drove them out. It's a clean narrow cut...better than I could do. It's not the first time he's used this method. I ask him if I should just weld them up once asembled, and he said I could but he never found it necessary, and would guarantee they wont back out or deform the link.!?
Got any Master links and locks Lavoy? If so, How much?
I considered having the bushings and pins rotated but they want $800 at the one local place I found so far. The guy also thought the bushings were apt to split in the process, and they want $720 for bushings and $720 for pins. Wish you were closer Lavoy. If I was starting over, I'd probabley go the 350 route on the track and sprockets (and wait for a 5 roller and post 100,000 serial# and a few more things I haven't learned yet.)
Anyone happen to know a good track shop in New England (ideally, Maine) besides Nortrax? I'll probabley run what I've bought, but it would be good to know whats out there.

Keep in mind that 5 pins is only 4 links, that might be goofing you up.
As to dimension, I was half right, or half assed, whichever you prefer. The wear is 1/4" per link, four links equals 1/2". The actual spec is 23.51", but we won't quibble over .01. I was thinking 1/16" wear per surface, trouble is I was thinking of 4 links as opposed to 8 wear surfaces.
You will be able to run them as is, but I think you will see some sprocket wear on new sprockets if you put many hours on due to increased pitch.

track wear
Thanks Lavoy. Can you tell me where you found that? I couldn't find it in the maintenance manual. Haven't found any wear limits on the links either. I believe you've said 3" height is pretty much shot, but probabley would go a long time unless one is doing alot of loader type work. Is that correct, and is that written anywhere or just the wisdom of experience?
track shop
Andrew,
Yes, I would like to have that number, just in case. Thankyou.
Looks like you have quite a crawler collection going there....you must make some money with one, to be able to afford the rest.
