Mark,
Thanks for the kind comments. My 440s are both 1959s. I like that model year because it has the bigger tranny but still has the throttle on the side. For some reason I do not like the look of the mid dash throttle on the 1960 model 440s.
One other point, the 440s were the last of the two cylinder crawlers as far as I know. That have all of the refinements and improvements that JD gave to two cylinders before changing to 3 and 4 cylinder in line engines in 1960.
I just think that the 440 is about the most bang for the buck as for collectible pre 1960 JD crawlers that will do some work if need be.

The 440I is the tractor equivalent to the 440IC crawler, and the 440ID is the tractor equivalent to the 440 ICD.

AFAIK the 435D is a green 440ID when you are looking at tractors not crawlers.

Hi,
I'd say the latest variant of the 440. The one with the larger tranny, finals, and everything else. Deere was constantly beefing them up as the years went by. So, the MC would be the lightest duty, and the last 440's the heaviest.
The trend continued with the 1010 and the 2010 and wound up at the 350 and the 450. They just kept getting bigger. If you park an MC next to a JD350, you'll see what I mean!
I've been looking for a JD350D for over a year now, but if I were to come across a decent 440 with a 64 PAT blade on it, I'd take a long, hard look!
