Trans is gear lube, either 90 wt, or 85W-140.
Reverser is common systems fluid, Deere used to call it 303 fluid, IH called it Multi-trans, Mobil calls it 424.
Engine is any good quality engine oil, either straight weight or multi-weight, will vary with your climate.

I would not, gear lube has different properties than a hyd type fluid, and it is not worth the risk of high dollar components to try anything else.

Hi,

The answer would also be 'no' if you're referring to automotive automatic transmission fluid.

The current name for JD hydraulic fluid is Hy-Gard, and that's what you want in the differential-style direction reverser. Plus, it's also what you want in the lift hydraulic system. :)

I never thought of ATF, I was just thinking of gear lube. According to the sevice manual, you can use Type A automatic trans fluid. Type A is not longer around, but I believe that Type F is the replacement. I still would not use ATF, I am just not a fan of it.
As far as Hy-Gard in the hydraulic system, you will get some pressure loss, and some increases howling. For whatever reason, these old gear pumps do not seem to like Hy-Gard and will howl. If/when I run a multi-trans, I always have to reshim the bypass to get pressure back. If cross contanination with other later model machines is not an issue, I have better luck in the hydraulics with a straight weight hydraulic oil. I normally run an AW68, if you are in real cold conditions, you could drop a wieght.
