Unfortunately, after an hour or so of use yesterday, I started to see burning particles shooting out of the exaust stack. Any thoughts?

Could just be carbon burning off. I would double check your timing to make sure it is not retarded too much, and make sure the mixture is not too lean. Both of these will contribute to excessive exhaust heat.
