Liner for diesel

Post by Stretch » Fri Mar 14, 2008 4:33 am

Does anyone know if I can overbore a liner from a 145 CI to make it a 165 CI? I found an engine block in great shape that is the same as my 2010, the only problem is the liner is 3 5/8 bore. I would have to bore it out .125 so my stock pistons would fit. I haven't knocked the liner out yet to measure the wall thickness but I think there should be plenty with it in the same type block as my 3 7/8 bore. I can't see JD machining the bottom webbing differently on the same casting used for the 2010.
Or does anyone know where I can get some 20 over pistons and then I could use my original liner.
Thanks in advance.

You kind of lost me. What .020 oversize piston are you looking for? 1010 gas, 1010 diesel, 2010 gas, 2010 diesel, etc.?

If you have a 144 c.i. block that is diesel - it must be a 1010 diesel engine - correct? If it gas, it would have less main bearings. So, you want to convert a 1010 diesel to a 2010 diesel?

1010 gas is the smallest bore, 1010 diesel is the same bore as the 2010 gas, and 2010 diesel is the bigger than all the rest. In regard to the wall thickness - I'm curious but don't know. I rebuilt many 1010s and 2010s at several Deere dealerships - but can't say I ever noticed. Even if the bore in the block matches - where the single o-ring seals, it doesn't mean the upper unsupported part of the sleeve has the same OD. Those with larger bores might have larger ODs, but like I said - I never noticed. I DO know of a few 1010 gas engines that were converted to 2010 by installing the larger 2010 sleeve-deck and pistons.

1010 gas 115 c.i. 3 1/2" bore X 3" stroke
1010 diesel 144 c.i. 3 5/8" bore by 3 1/2" stroke
2010 gas 144 c.i. 3 5/8" bore by 3 1/2" stroke
2010 diesel 165 c.i. 3 7/8" bore by 3 1/2" stroke

I am looking for 20 over pistons for a 2010 diesel. Sorry about the confusion.
I think you might be right about the top of the liner in the unsupported area. Well at least I have a really good liner for a 1010 :) and the block is perfect. Guess I will slap some cosmoline on them and stick them in the barn.

The heavier the liner the better, due to cavitation erosion concerns. Also, I THINK the liner is cast iron, which isn't going to have the necessary ductility to resist the increased stress on a thinner cross section.
