MC service

Post by Mr. B » Sun Mar 30, 2008 7:49 am

Sadly buying my MC in good shape I failed to understand the need for inspections and adjustments. I pulled the steering covers and started to follow the manual and reset the T/O brg. after finaly rapping a univeral with a little duck tape with the 1/2 crow foot and was able to get it angled to release the lock stud on the (L) which was way off. Will still have to do some tweeking to make sure. What I did find having final drives and new tracks that it looked like I have a new clutch on the (R) and not the left. The thickness is almost twice and probaly need to plan on replaceing the (L). I took a sand hillside down 25 feet having the brg out of adjustment would it cause a new clutch to wear that much. Am changing the fluids, they dont look that bad is it still a good idea to flush the old girl and will deisel work the same as kerose? Also I have a ribbed sreen radiator grille and noticed some are different. Aslo I am in the third series I thought I read there was only 3 not 4 as you have posted. Thanks Mr. B upstate NY

Any time the clutch is slipping there is going to be wear of the discs. you may get her to work for a while with the adjustment, but in the long run you will need to replace the discs. I don't like to use the steering clutches anytime i am under a heavy push. these are old machines and we have to baby them a bit. I would think that diesel would flush out the boxes as well as kerosine. it is a bit thicker, but should help clean them out.
Have fun

The diesel would flush the crankcase much like the kerosene, but you could also use an over the counter motor flush that would also do the trick.

Thanks for you input. I was going to fabricate a whrech but noticed on the repaired side they switched to a ellen head cap screw. I ordered new 6V bulbs so will be getting the lights fixed this weekend. Is the distributor keyed? Mine is out 180 so the wires are out in the open. Can I pull it and drop it back in 180? Will get hold of Lavoy for parts he seems to be one of the better places to go. Was the only dozer in the local show last year and had allot of folks look her over. Painting is the easy part once I find new decals. I have a ribbed front grille is this comman on the later MC's? After reading about the guy that hit 4th in the snow I leveled my 20' high snow pile I looked out in the field and went for it, a little doggy at first but smothed rite out. Wouldnt of tried it if I didnt have the new track. Looking at a 450 next to work on the trails. I had a 350 but need something bigger. Thanks Agin Mr. B Upstate NY

Only way to rotate the distributor is to pull the oil pump and rotate it as well.
