No way to diagnose without more info. It could be either one or both of the scenarios you listed.
Are all of the clutches adjusted correctly?
When you had it split, did you check the engine clutch?

Lavoy, over the weekend i split the tractor again, this time paying more attention to the clutch and plate. the disk looks great but the pressure plate springs seem a little loose there is play on all the springs, could this be the reason the machines track stop under a decent size load thanks Tim

That sounds very suspicious. Once the pressure plate is bolted down, the springs should be so tight that there is no way you could wiggle them at all. Look closely, sometimes the springs will be broken.

Tim-

Personally I'd replace it. Do you really want to go back through the whole pulling the motor again. What's a little bit more money and the same labor. I'm not 100% sure but I don't think they are that much and I'm pretty sure Lavoy can set you up. I'd probably do a disk and the whole works actually. Been my experience with my 420, anything I don't pay real good attention to, will come back to haunt me.

Just my humble $.02

Tim,
Springs themselves are no longer available.
I have rebuilt pressure plates on hand, as well as clutch disc and throwout bearing.

Lavoy, well.. this weekend i was able to put the 420 through the paces around the farm. she performed well for the first couple of hours. as i was working i noticed that she would push but she started to slip again. I am a little concerned with the clutch disk now its fibre and looked great when i split her. i dont mind breaking her down i getting real good and fast at it. now am certain i should have got the whole clutch kit from you let there be a lasson here. I was able to find that the steering clutches would not turn when she slipped thus making me believe its the engine clutch. Like i said i dont mind splitting her again i learning all kinds of things and besides this keeps me from the HONEY DO list. So i think im in the market for a new disk. Ill call this morning. Thanks Tim

Did you set the fingers on the pressure plate with the gauge I sent you? If so, I think it is not the engine clutch.
Do you have enough free play in the clutch pedal?
Double check and make sure that it is not the steering clutches slipping instead.

Lavoy.. just to update you on my issue. After splitting the 420 muliple times over the weekend i was determined to find the slip. Wife was away so i had no distractions. I installed a new clutch disk, along with the new pressure plate i got from you. Did you know that a 1949 ford disk is exactly the same. I can now split this thing with my eyes closed. however I took special care on alignment and adjustment. moreso than the backyard farmer way. i removed all the bailing wire used as cotter pins and on my last try i was very impressed that the trial run proved satifactory. I am pleased to announce that the 420 is delivering performance just fine. Your help has been greatly apprechiated and look forward to your advice on OTHER issues. Thanks again Tim
