420c final drive

Post by DozerAndy » Sat Apr 05, 2008 1:52 pm

Hey all,
Now have all parts to reassemble the final drive (thanks Lavoy). My question is, what have you all found to be the best way to install the bearings and cups? Do you use a press or slide hammer? The outer bearing on the flanged axle - do you use a scrap piece of tubing the right size to press it on or is their another trick? Any tips, advice, pictures or links to other threads would be appreciated. Just don't want to mess anything up.
Thanks, Andy

Hi
I just rebuilt the final on my 1010. I heated the bearings on an electric hot plate and slid them on the shafts, Usually they will slide right in place. If they don't it's always good to have a pipe or something you can press with. When I put in the races I had to press them in with a screw and nut. I made plates that registered on the face of the race and drew them in. I had to put a race in the pinion cover, I just pressed that in with a hydraulic press.
I hope this helps!

Bob or anyone,
On those plates that you made to draw the races in, what thickness of plate did you use? I was thinking around 5/16" or 3/8".
I'm going to the metal shop tomorrow and get 4 round plates made with a bolt hole centered in each in the following diameters: 2 3/8", 2 11/16", 3 1/4". Also a 6" length of thick wall pipe with 2.5" inside diameter and a 4" length with a 1 11/16" inside diameter (or as close to with going to small). What am I forgetting?
