440 Direction Reverser

Post by In to deep » Wed Apr 09, 2008 8:42 pm

Have a 440 That I just started up Wednesday 4-8-08. I noticed Thrusday when I had a good chance of some use, that when I use the direction reverser level in 2nd gear its normal speed then slows, then normal speed, then slows. All the gears work just fine, is there something with the direction lever. Thanks for any info.

Could be slipping, does the reverser lever snap over pretty good when you shift the reverser?

Moving the level back and fourth seems to go nice and smooth, the dozer goes forward just fine.

Adjusting those clutches is routine maintenance. Unlike a hydraulic-powered clutch reverser as used in later 1010s and 350s - your's are fully mechanical. They must be tightened once in a while or they slip. Each pack is separate - and each one should take some efffort and "snap" a bit to engage. If not, it's too loose. 10 minute job to adjust it properly - and if you don't, the clutches will burn up.

The reverser lever should have a distinct "SNAP" as it engages, I think the spec is 20+ lbs pull at the tip of the lever to engage the reverser. If yours does not do this, you must adjust the reverser clutch/s.

Hi,

Yup. The feel to it in your hand should be such that it becomes ever stiffer to move, and then suddenly lose all stiffness with a 'jumping' feel and a noticable 'snap' sound from inside the reverser housing.

In fact, it feels such that if it's the first time you're working one of these, you think something let go inside the thing. ;)

That's normal.

If the lever motion is smooth and easy with no snap, that's when it's in trouble!

Later!

Stan
