If you take it easy and make sure you do not cross stumps or other high spots, you should be fine just playing out back.
Be careful if you decide to take them off, those plates are heavier than they look.

My 40c has a sod plate this is quite different than the skid plates . I see it in the parts book as a sod plate .It is half the thickness and a lot less protection than the skid plate .I have never had the 40c that deep in mud but they go through more mud with a skid plate or sod plate on as they are flat on the belly.I have crashed over a few stumps with it .So if you take yours off don't go playing in the mud or strattle stumps to aggresively that is all .Digitup.

For what it's worth, I have two 2010's. And I believe the skid plates may aid in keeping the frame rails square while also protecting things underneath. Not 100% sure of this maybe someone out there would have a better perspective.
I do know the linkages and hydraulic lines would be prone to damage without the plates.
Just my two cents.

I just finished fabing up the front plate for my 440, 1/4 inch plate and 2" angle worked like a charm. I need to finish te back now. I've played a little with out any belley pans but boy does that make me nervous. All it takes is one small tree limb or stump to ruin a good day.

Is the sod pan listed in the parts book on page 40-1, and the skid plate on pages 50-4 and 50-5?

Looks like I have the front of the skid plate, but the back is missing. Does the back protect the final drives at all? It bothers me how low they hang from the machine and sure enough when I took one off there was a repair from when the pan had been smashed off.

If the skid plate is as long as the newer crawlers have it goes to the draw bar plate but as mine is only a sod plate I will have to look at the old Deere out behind the shop and see what is on it.Ok I am back and it has the full skid plate to hitch considerably different than the sod plate and twice as thick .Those plates do add some structure to the crawler as well but the one on the 40c would do anything but that .The ones on the H and J series are just more than cosmetic so I dont think they do much for structure as well .Lookin at the 550 B and 450E they have a sound fastening but a few 1/2 bolts won't do much for structure Maybe on the 1010 series and to the old 450C there was structure to the skid plate .One of the Js has one bent up bad looks like sheet metal .they will probably be plastic soon .Digitup.
