adjusting the steering clutch fingers 420c

Post by DozerAndy » Mon Apr 21, 2008 11:24 pm

In the final stages of rebuilding the left final and steering clutch in a 56 420c. Put in 7 new fibers and 6 new steels, bolted down new pressure plate, set new steering clutch gauge on the brake drum and even with the adjusting nuts all of the way down, could not get the fingers to touch the gauge (maybe .12-.13" clearance between gauge and fingers). I took the pressure plate back off and measured the height of the disks and it was 1.688" - about .055" over the specs. Any ideas about where to go from here?

If you are using my gauge, and are within .125 of the gauge, just make sure they are all the same height, and you will be within factory spec.

If this posting works, below is the pressure plate before bolting down, just resting on top of the clutch disks.

I think it was easier rebuilding the final than posting a picture! But thanks Lavoy, that makes me feel a lot better. Can't wait to slap it back in and start playing around on it.
