Can anyone tell me what is that lever for on top of the tranny on a 440,just to the left of the shifter?

PTO. It is on all of them whether the PTO is in it or not. You can add one if it is not already in there.
Do you have a 1958 or a later one? If it has a dip stick on top of the tranny, you have the later one which is either '59 or '60.

I'll have to look to see if it has a dipstick on the tranny.I don't actually know what year it is because the ID tag is missing{actually no trace it was ever there or elsewhere}from the dash. All I have is the ID tag on the loader boom that says model 831 and serial #1983.So,in what position is the PTO engaged? Mine right now is actually frozen---I'll have to juice it up some.

If you have an 831, it is likely that you will have the big transmission with the dipstick on top near the PTO lever.

The ID tag on a 440 IC (GAS) is on the left side kinda behind the carb. The 440 ICD (DIESEL) is the one on the lower dash.
1958 has small tranny with no dip stick and no cover plate under the seat. 1959 has big tranny with dip stick on the front left of the tranny and cover plate under the seat. 1960 has the big tranny and the throttle is in the center of the dash panel and moves up and down.
