checking out a 440 to purchase

Post by Mr. B » Wed May 28, 2008 5:51 am

looking at a 440 2 cyl. gm diesel, what I know at this point is that the hood is off don't know why. Owner claims it runs good but steers only to the left believes the brake band broke. leaky seal on lift cyl. blade needs welding. May be able to traid my big boat even up so price is rite at this point. Having the MC for 3 years know some things picked up from the web. Will follow up once I see it running and operate. Hope the weight is under 3 tons that is what I can haul with my gooseneck without uping it to 4. Any trouble zones that I should be concerend with? Thanks Mr. B PS wife says I am going to a wedding so cant make the tractor show.

It is impossible to assess a piece of equipment on this web site. Lavoy and others have vast experience and can give you some pointers to look for.
I have a 440 ICD, love it. The GM diesels are either recently rebuilt (the owner and the buyer will know this by the way it starts and runs), or they are worn slap out and need to be rebuilt soon.
I am rebuilding mine right now.

440ICD Questions

Post by Mr. B » Thu May 29, 2008 8:44 am

Thank You for your response. The model I looked I think is the ICD Serial #458?4 Hood was off due to a fuel leak repair. Unit is in rough shape compared to my MC. Owner said the blade needed welding. His friend was there to fix it but am concerd that the (L) frame rail was busted into where it hooks on the chasis. Am going back to road test it this weekend. It has only a manual ajustment for Blade angle. There is a whinch on the rear but 1/2 the controls missing. The reverser works per the owner. The pin that holds the brake band snapped or fell out so it only steers 1 way. Started up and ran smoth with no smoking. Building ATV trails so this machine can handle pushing down small trees that the MC cant handle. Looks to heavy to get thru swamps. Good chance I can swap for my boat so price is rite to fix up. Found a neighbor who has a 350 with steering clutchs gone that may be forsale. Anyone know the horse power of the 350? and Did they come with 6way blades as standard equitment. The 440 is listed as 26 at draw bar. Later Mr. B

I would check out the 350 before a 440,the 440 sounds like it is busted up.
the 350 is alot easier to find parts for, more advanced, better machine to me.

If a straight 350, the gross engine HP at flywheel is 46, the net engine HP at flywheel is 42, and the drawbar HP is 30. It is the same for both gas and diesel.

Spec sheets for many of the major models are located here:

http://www.murphyused.com/specs.php

If you lose this link, I have it posted in the "Web Links" forum.
(1) JD Straight 450 crawler dozer with manual outside blade; (2) JD 2010 diesel crawler loaders; (1) JD 2010 diesel dozer with hydraulic 6-way blade; (2) Model 50 backhoe attachments, misc. other construction equipment
