Valve clearance for 1010 diesel

Post by Rick1010 » Fri Sep 16, 2005 11:57 am

Just picked up a '64 1010 4-cyl diesel. Doing the servicing now...anyone know what the clearance should be for the valves?

Best Regards
Rick

Jeff,
Are your glow plugs all working, and are you using them every time? How long are you preheating before starting?
A 1010 diesel on an 80 degree day that has not been run that day will need to be preheated at least 30 seconds before it will start. If it has the primer attachment, it will say to give it two strokes of primer while preheating. Don't make the assumption that just because it is new and tight it will start without preheating.
We were using my brother's 1010 diesel this weekend. It was in the mid 80's here, and I preheated it for almost a minute and gave it two strokes on the primer, and it fired right off. This is not a new engine by any means, and I have started it without ether below 20 degrees by preheating and priming.

O-rings may get the primer working.
I have glow plugs if you have the late style.

If the injection pump timing is off, could that cause it not to run smoothly? Or is the timing adjustable?

Yes, they are adjustable, but not sure it timing affect a diesel like a gas.
I think what he was referring to is when first started. When first starting a 1010 diesel without primer or glow plugs, it will hit on about as many cylinders as a 420 for a while.

Many thanks for the valve gap info.

Regarding the starting, the guy I bought the machine from told me to always preheat the glow plugs for 30 seconds no matter the outside temperature. Seemed to work good for him.

30 seconds is for warm weather. Once it gets a little cooler, it is a minute, and below freezing it is 2 minutes and 3 or 4 strokes of primer.
