Post by 440dozer » Thu Jul 03, 2008 4:10 pm

i have a 440 track loader and one track adjuster tightened up when pumped w grease but when i pump grease into the ther side the grease comes out of a small hole directly underneath the grease zerk ( bottom side of track adj.) why won't it adjust? I have a shop manual but it doesn' have the hyd. track adjusters in there just the screw adjust stye.

Sounds like it needs new cups, they were available from JD about a year ago.
The cups are similar to hydraulic cylinder leathers.

That is the bleed hole, you must not have the set screw turned in all the way. Right next to the zerk is another hole, should have a 1/2" bolt in it. Take the bolt out, and tighten up the set screw in the hole, that should cure it.

Lavoy, I just bought steering clutches and a brake band a few days ago and waiting for them to come in, but my question is on the clutch basket where the steel disk tabs insert into the basket and ride , over time they where grooves ino the metal. can I get a flat bastard and file it back smooth to ensure smooth clutch actuation? I have had some racing four-wheelers with clutch baskets that also did the same thing put new clutches in but they would hang up on the grooves so i took them back out and filed the grooves back to a flat surface and then they worked fine would it work the same for the steering clutch basket on my dozer?

I forgot about the bleed hole. I figured he would see grease skirting all over the place if it was open.

Won't hurt a thing to file them flat, do it all the time.

I just threw a track off on Mon. Got her back together but in a previous post, mention was made of a bottom bleed hole on the hyd. adjusting cylinder.I was able to partially collapse the cylinder with the set screw out completely using a 4X4 squeezing between the idler and the back of the bucket. My cylinder does have a small plug app. 180* from the set screw.I didn't open it to release the old grease since some came out of the set screw hole.I'm used to the 350-450 type. What's the deal with that plug???Strange that only the screw type adjuster is in my service manual.

If the plug you are talking about is on the bottom, someone has put a plug in the bleed hole, I have had some that way.

To check what you really have in there; plug up the bleed hole under the adjuster (toward the ground). On the top side of the adjuster, remove the cover bolt and remove the set screw further down in that same hole with an allen wrench. Then if you pump some grease into the grease fitting, it should come out the hole where the set screw was - and it should push out a steel ball along with the grease. It is that ball that seals the bleed hole when pressed on by the set screw.

If your does not have the ball, that may be why someone put a screw plug directly in the bleed hole to keep the grease from coming out.

I have also seen adjusters that did not have a cover bolt, a ball, or a set screw. Instead they had a long bolt that had a dimpled end to take the place of the ball arrangement.

On the top,I have a 1/2'' bolt and a regular nut---that's my set screw, there is no allen bolt and the ball is gone.
