repairing track adjusters 440ic

Post by yasmar » Mon Aug 11, 2008 10:58 am

Threw a track yesterday and in putting it back on, noticed that the right side track adjuster was blowing grease from around the rod.

How much of a job is it to remove one of these? Mine has a "Shroud" around the rear portion...does this come off?

Move the track so the pin is to the lower rear of the drive sprocket. Remove the pin. Lay the track off forward. Unbolt the adjuster from the front idler wheel. Slide the idler wheel forward on the rails. Lift out the adjuster.

Open the adjuster setscrew to release the grease pressure. Push the adjuster piston in a little. Remove the internal snap ring. Pull out the piston. Replace the seals.

It may be less work than you did replacing the thrown track yesterday (and it may be the reason the track came off).

Wow...is it really that easy? Are the seals readily available?

Seals are available from John Deere. They made a couple of variations, and sometimes people have upgraded to a newer style, so try to have them order the correct ones.

Another way without pulling the track is block the front idler. Crack loose the 4 bolts on the track adjuster remove the grease bolt and allow idler to pull back a little then block the idler slide. I would use heavy C-clamp or vise grip on front and block of hard wood on rear so that it cannot move finish removing bolts take out and replace seals they are only between $11-$20 for kit depending on where you get them or drop off at a shop. I have had to lift the front of the track up a little with the blade before, it helps to take the pressure off when you compress the adjuster. Then I set it back down. I am sure Lavoy has them to.

Wow...it was a piece of cake.
Didn't have to break the track. Blocked the machine in back and under the blade...raised enough so the track was off the ground. Collapsed the adjuster, swung the track off enough the remove the idler wheel and slide the adjuster off.

Took about an hour.

Pretty much, just unbolt the mechanical aduster and install the hyd adjuster.
