John Deere 440/GM Diesel Engine
$405.00
Hey guys! I just got this nice note from eBay. I can't believe one of you hasn't snapped this up!
Of course, maybe one of you is selling it. Hmmmm.
I would have cleaned it up a little bit and hung a sheet behind it to block out "other projects awaiting completion". It looks like my back yard.

253 Diesel
Whoever bought the diesel got a good deal. The accessory bracket in the front is worth 250 and all the brackets for the fuel filter and oil filter are there also. If it runs it is a good price. Tom.

Of course you're right about the motor. I thought the pix of the machine were prize winning. Even though it's there for "display" purposes, I would have taken the junk out of the bucket. The setting tells such a story. I've seen some miserable looking machinery but those pictures made me think of an aproned wife chasing hubby out the door with a rolling pin and telling him to clean up the yard. Whew. If any of you all put that ad up on eBay, I'm going to have to resign from the club. C'est la vie.
In my next posting, I'll reveal what my wife says about my back yard.

Hey Laverne, you weren't kidding! I think you went seventy-five cents too high with your last bid there. Seriously, this site has been invaluable to me. Your first assignment is to read all the stuff that's already been posted. It's a lot and will probably answer most of your questions. I'm just being extra nice here because I don't wanna hafta resign for obnoxious behavior in my previous post.
Laverne? Meet Lavoy, he's your new best friend. Laverne and Lavoy. Is that a sitcom? Compared to bringing a one lung Cadillac or a Stevens Duryea back to life, this 440 should be a breeze. In a time when people take beautiful things and turn them into garbage, I find it greatly rewarding to take garbage and turn it into something beautiful. I suspect we all take great pride in saying, "I built that."

Hi,
Ah, yes. You are the proud owner of a 'Project'!
You're cutting your tractor restoration teeth on a crawler/loader? Hoo Boy!
I will say that tractors aren't like cars, and crawlers aren't like tractors, and crawler/loaders are even *more* fun, fun fun!
Keep in mind, that everything on that old girl weighs 10x what the equivalent item on a car does. Don't strain something!
Oh, and be prepared to learn a whole new definition of 'stuck' here. You think nuts and bolts get stuck on old cars? You're in for a whole new level of 'stuck' here!
But, take your time and you'll do OK in the end.
Later!
Stan
