420 Reverser

Post by Earl » Thu Sep 04, 2008 5:59 pm

The reverser on my 420 crawler did not always engage easily in the forward direction. Now it will not engage at all in the forward direction. It grinds the gears if I try to hold the shifter forward. It works fine in the reverse direction. I guess the reverser, transmission, and final drives have to be removed. Any guess what kind of problem I will find with the reverser? Are their any shortcuts in removing all the iron?

Thanks, Earl

My guess would be the thrust bearings, thrust washers and needle bearings in the reverser. Be careful how you remove the reverser shift lever!

It might be easier to remove the engine and center housing to get to it.

We had the tracks off for repair so went at it from the rear . Whichever way, we weren't diligent enough when removing the reverser lever and the tube it is involved with and broke the cast housing. It wasn't too bad since we have a "wizard" with metal worker in the family but it could have been not-too-good otherwise!

We had a good time and learned a lot.

Lavoy found and furnished everything we needed to do a good job.
