exhaust pipe vs manifold

Has anyone else ever have the problem of the exhaust pipe breaking off at the top edge of the manifold, and it has been welded on so I thought someone may have a suggestion or two on some a way to fix it... thanks randy

Ive welded them on before but is just not strong at all . unless u no someone that can weld cast the right way but it just turns brittel. maybe brazing it If you can get it hot enuff but I think it is just as easy to buy new or find used

Welding with a nickel alloy filler rod/ electrode is certainly an option. Pre and post heat is critcal. Silver solder is also a viable option, but will also require some pre/post heat . Silver solder will tolerate the inservice heat better than brazing. Mark

I presume you're talking 420 style here.

Mine was just a short piece of steel exhaust pipe with a flange welded on in the middle. When it rusted off just under the flange - even with the top of the cast iron manifold - I used a chisel and removed the remaining piece of pipe that was stuck down inside the manifold. The local ag supply outfit had the short piece in stock and so I just put in a new one.

My 'M' was the same thing, only different. In place of the short piece of pipe to clamp the muffler onto, it has the short piece incorporated into the muffler itself. The same problem occured, though, so I used the same fix.

I used JB weld to repair one last year and it is still holding.

If you are going to weld on cast refer back to the post on "Broken Steering lever" , I mentioned the best way to weld on cast, and pre post heat is essential as well as having a way for it to cool very, very, slow. Lime works very well for this if you are able to remove the piece in order to get it in a bucket or bag of lime after welding.
