420 PTO Shifter

Post by DeLo » Fri Oct 03, 2008 12:51 pm

I have a 1956 420. It has a pto. It worked fine until I disengaged the shifter once and it felt funny shifting. Now the shifter won't move from the disengaged position and I can't use the PTO. What will it take to fix this? Will the whole transmission have to come apart or can i fix it by removing the transmission cover? Thanks for any help.

i would take the top cover off its pretty easy, put trans in neutral pull cover, if the pto has,nt been taken out in a while there could be rust on the shaft, there is also a bushing in the housing that could be rusty.. if the pto was used alot though the years the fork could be worn and not pulling the gear straight cocking it enough to bind on shaft, on side of the transmission there is a plug if you take this out there is a spring and ball bearing, this holds pto in gear this ball bearing could be rusty or just plain worn, you may want to check this also.. others may have better info for you..good luck.
