Grease Gun

Post by haljoe40 » Thu Oct 13, 2005 9:58 pm

Since the topic of grease came up...

The 350 has a "special" grease gun for track adjustment (per manual) which of course I don't have. Can a regular one be used or do I need to get one from a JD dealer.

Thanks, just got a 350 last week.

Nothing special needed for the gun. If you have button head fittings, you will need the hose end.

So what is the difference between regular zerk's and the button-head fittings (I know what each looks like)? Just how robust the button-head ones might be if hit by rocks and such?

Hi,

The button head ones are much harder to damage, which is why they use them, I presume.

Dad got tired of the chore of cleaning the dirt out from under the buttons of the ones on his 420, so he replaced them with zerk ones. Every once in a while one of the zerks gets damaged, but it's easy enough to replace them.

I think the designers figured that zerk fittings would get busted and no one would bother replacing them, so they used the button head ones instead. Not that it mattered. Few people ever bothered to actually grease the rollers, anyway - at least from the state of many machines I've seen over the years! :p

I think also that when they were using lubesters instead of grease guns, the button head end holds itself on and can't fall off.
